Veteran free agent defensive back Alex Suber has agreed to a contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, per sources.
Suber has five seasons of CFL experience under his belt, spending the first four with the Blue Bombers until Winnipeg traded him to Toronto in September 2014, where he finished the campaign in double blue.
The 29-year-old was cut by the Argos in training camp this year and ever since he’s been waiting to catch on with another team.
Over the course of his career in Canada, Suber has racked up 249 tackles, 28 special teams tackles, six fumble recoveries, four interceptions and one sack.
Saskatchewan currently has four international defensive backs on the six-game injured list, so they needed to bolster that area. Top among those names with setbacks is starting strong-side halfback, Weldon Brown, who was lost for the season after Week 3 with a torn pectoral muscle, and starting field corner, Tristan Jackson, who went down with an ankle injury in Week 4.
Enter Suber, who has played halfback and corner. The diminutive five-foot-seven, 173-pound cover man might fare better in a league that now has less clutching, grabbing and overall contact between receivers and defensive backs.
