The Toronto Argonauts have named former Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Tim Burke the team’s new defensive coordinator.

“Tim Burke is an experienced defensive coordinator who has coached in four of the past six Grey Cup games,” Argos head coach Scott Milanovich said in a press release. “I couldn’t be more thrilled that he has joined our staff and will lead our defence in 2014.”

Burke is replacing Chris Jones, who was recently named head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos.

“I’m excited to join the Toronto Argonauts and to once again work with Scott Milanovich and Jim Barker,” Burke said. “I’m confident this team has the foundation to be competitive and successful for years to come and I’m anxious to be a part of it.”

Burke debuted in the CFL in 2005 where he was the defensive backs coach with the Calgary Stampeders until 2007. He then served as the Montreal Alouettes’ defensive coordinator under Marc Trestman for three seasons. Following his time with the Als, he joined the Blue Bombers as defensive coordinator in 2011 and was named head coach midway through the 2012 season, but only mustered a 7-21 record over the course of two seasons.

The Argos will also look to add a new special teams coach after Mike O’Shea was named the Blue Bombers’ new head coach.
