Some plays in the CFL are more costly than others.
For Winnipeg Blue Bombers fan Karen Kuldys, one play cost her $1 million.
Kuldys took part in the Safeway $1,000,000 Touchdown To Win contest, where someone would win the money if two kickoffs were returned for touchdowns in a CFL game. In Thursday’s game between the Toronto Argonauts and the Blue Bombers, Kuldys missed out on the big prize by 25 yards.
After Argos running back Martese Jackson scored what looked like a touchdown, it looked like Kuldys would be a winner. But a flag on the play called the touchdown back and took away her chance at becoming a millionaire.
The internet immediately rallied behind Kuldys and #WhatAboutKaren became the top trending topic on Twitter.
Sportsnet’s Caroline Cameron talked to Kuldys by phone on Thursday night and the interview was broadcast on Sportsnet Central.
“You don’t feel too good. To think that one call cost you $1 million,” Kuldys said. “Too crazy.”
Kuldys told the CBC’s Devin Heroux that she still won a new entertainment system valued at $25,000. But coming that close to $1 million will leave a mark for sure.
“My heart just sank and I thought — oh my god how close could I get to one million dollars,” Kuldys said to Heroux.
“My stomach is in knots just thinking about it right now.”
