CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers have hired former CFL player Ron Meeks as their new defensive co-ordinator.
Meeks spent the past seven seasons running the Indianapolis Colts' defence. He replaces Mike Trgovac, who resigned last week despite being offered a contract extension.
Prior to becoming a coach, Meeks spent five seasons in the CFL as a defensive back with Hamilton, Ottawa and Toronto from 1977 to 1981.
Meeks, 54, takes over a Panthers' defence that struggled at the end of the season. Carolina allowed 30 or more points in six of its last seven games, including in a 33-13 loss to Arizona in the NFC divisional playoffs.
The move Monday leaves the Panthers with three openings on coach John Fox's defensive staff.
