NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Kansas City Chiefs cornerback David Macklin was arrested Friday in Newport News on a drunken driving charge, Virginia State Police said.
State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said Macklin was stopped around 3:30 a.m. for vehicle windows tinted beyond the limits allowed by Virginia law.
During the stop, the officer smelled an odour of alcohol, Geller said. Macklin was given a blood alcohol test and his level was above the legal limit, she said.
Macklin was held in the city jail until he posted bond before noon Friday. Officials did not know if the 30-year-old NFL player had retained a lawyer.
Macklin attended high school in Newport News and joined the Chiefs in November after he was released by St. Louis. He also has played for Indianapolis, Washington and Arizona, where he posted his best season in 2004 with 62 tackles and four interceptions.
