SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Offensive tackle Marvel Smith signed a two-year deal Monday with the San Francisco 49ers, who expect him to be their starting right tackle.
Smith spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, starting 108 regular-season games and making the Pro Bowl after the 2005 season. He also started 10 post-season games and earned two Super Bowl rings, but a back injury sidelined him for most of last season while Pittsburgh won the NFL title.
Smith is an Oakland native who played his first three seasons at right tackle in Pittsburgh before moving to left tackle for the past six. Injuries limited him to just 17 games over the past two seasons.
