Smith lost his starting job last season when he was replaced by second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick while sitting out with a concussion. He led San Francisco to a 6-2 record before he was demoted in favour of Kaepernick.
The former No. 1 overall pick struggled throughout the early parts of his career in San Francisco but became one of the league’s most efficient passers in the last two seasons under Jim Harbaugh.
Smith had his best statistical season in 2011 where he threw for 3,144 yards with 17 touchdowns and a 90.7 passer rating in a season where he lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship.
The 49ers signed Smith to a three-year deal last off-season. He is said to be an excellent fit for Chiefs new head coach Andy Reid’s offence.
The Chiefs are expected to release incumbent starter Matt Cassel when they officially acquire Smith from San Francisco.
Kansas City has the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and is not expected to use the selection on a quarterback.
