CINCINNATI — Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was added to the Pro Bowl on Tuesday, replacing the injured Aaron Rodgers.
Dalton was a seventh alternate in voting for the Pro Bowl last month. Rodgers had a calf injury during the playoffs. Green Bay lost the NFC championship game to Seattle 28-22 in overtime.
It’s Dalton’s second trip to the Pro Bowl. He also made it during his 2011 rookie season and went 7 of 9 for 99 yards, including touchdown passes of 47 and three yards to Brandon Marshall.
Dalton has set numerous Bengals passing records while leading them to the playoffs each of his first four seasons. He and Baltimore’s Joe Flacco are the only quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era to lead their teams to the playoffs in each of their first four years. Flacco has won a Super Bowl; Dalton is 0-4 in the playoffs, coming off a 26-10 opening-round loss in Indianapolis this season.
Dalton completed 64.1 per cent of his passes this season — a career high — while throwing for 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, his worst touchdown-to-interception ratio. He threw for 3,398 yards, his fewest since his rookie season.
The Bengals have four players in the Pro Bowl. Receiver A.J. Green and punter Kevin Huber were voted in directly. Defensive tackle Geno Atkins replaced the injured Ndamukong Suh of Detroit.
