It’s been one week since the Cleveland Browns shook up their front office with the firing of Sashi Brown and hiring of John Dorsey, and the club’s new general manager has been busy assessing his team.
When it came time to talk about the roster he inherited about during an interview on the Really Big Show on Cleveland’s WKNR 850, Dorsey didn’t mince words.
“You know what? You’ve got to get [head coach Hue Jackson] players,” Dorsey said Thursday. “And you know what? I’ll come straight out with it. The guys who were here before, that system, they didn’t get real players.”
Former executive vice-president of football operations, Sashi Brown, approached the building of the Browns through an analytical lens that favoured draft picks and cap space. While he fumbled when it came to highly rated quarterbacks in the past two drafts, Brown did manage to make some strong first- and second-round selections.
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam gave Jackson a huge vote of confidence when he announced Brown’s firing last week, saying he intended to bring Jackson back for another season despite the dismal win-loss record. Dorsey didn’t go that far, but made it clear that he intends to set the head coach up for success.
“As Bill Parcells would always say, ‘you are your record’ and you know what? There it is, so that’s the truth-teller in this thing,” Dorsey said, referencing the team’s 1-27 record under Brown’s guidance. “And I’m going to do my darnedest to get Hue players.
“And that’s all I can ask for, and that’s all I’m going to do,” he said. “I like the man.”
Dorsey served as Kansas City Chiefs GM for four years, bringing them back into contention and acquiring franchise players Alex Smith, Travis Kelce, Marcus Peters and Tyreek Hill.
