GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Packers have formally announced the re-signing of backup running back James Starks, keeping their formidable backfield intact.

Starks, whose return was first reported by media outlets late Monday, returns to back up Offensive Rookie of the Year Eddie Lacy. General manager Ted Thompson announced the move Wednesday.

Drafted in the sixth round out of Buffalo in 2010, Starks ran for 493 yards and three touchdowns last season on 89 carries. The 6-foot-2 Starks had some explosive runs up the middle against defences already worn down by the bruising Lacy.

Another veteran member of the Packers backfield, fullback John Kuhn, remains a free agent.
