The San Francisco 49ers could be in trouble at wide receiver.
According to a report from USA Today, Michael Crabtree suffered a torn Achillies tendon during organized team activities Tuesday and his season could be in jeopardy.
Crabtree broke out with San Francisco last season after the team replaced Alex Smith with Colin Kaepernick at quarterback. He set career-highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns in his fourth year with the club.
The 49ers traded for veteran wideout Anquan Boldin from the Baltimore Ravens earlier this off-season. But if Crabtree is out for an extended period they could have difficulty replacing him in the starting lineup.
Outside of Boldin, they have a number of question marks at the position including last year’s first-round pick A.J. Jenkins – who caught zero passes and was targeted just once.
The team also has Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams at the position but the two are coming off serious knee injuries.
San Francisco is expected to make an official announcement on Crabtree’s status later this week.
