The Kansas City Chiefs are open to trading quarterback Alex Smith this off-season, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport cites what is expected to be a high demand for starting quarterbacks this off-season and internal excitement about 2017 first-round pick Patrick Mahomes, who impressed in the pre-season and a Week 17 win over the Denver Broncos, as reasons the Chiefs would listen to offers on their starter.
However, Rapoport says Kansas City may be inclined to keep Smith should he lead the team to Super Bowl LII.
Smith is coming off one of his best seasons as a pro, throwing a career-high 26 touchdown passes and just five interceptions, tying his lowest total in a season where he’s played at least 10 games. The Chiefs offence ranked sixth in total points and fifth in total yards in 2017.
In his report, Rapoport mentions the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills and Broncos among the teams that could have interest in the 33-year-old pivot.
