The New England Patriots are going to trade for Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen, according to multiple reports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports New England is sending Indianapolis a fourth-round pick in exchange for Allen and a sixth-round pick.
Allen was selected by the Colts in the third round (64th) of the 2012 NFL Draft. The 27-year-old had 406 yards and six touchdowns on 35 receptions in 2016.
This now means in all likelihood Martellus Bennett won’t be returning to the Patriots. Bennett played an important role in his first year with the Patriots, racking up 701 yards and seven touchdowns on 55 receptions and filled in nicely when Rob Gronkowski was injured.
The trade marks the first significant transaction from new Colts general manager Chris Ballard after Ryan Grigson was fired in January.
This move comes one day after the Colts re-signed fellow tight end Jack Doyle.
