WASHINGTON — The Washington Redskins have re-signed free-agent quarterback Colt McCoy, who started four games for the team last season.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

McCoy, 28, appeared in five games overall in his first season with the Redskins, completing 91 of 128 passes (71.7 per cent) for 1,057 yards, with four touchdown passes, three interceptions and a team-high passer rating of 96.4.

The McCoy signing means, at least for now, the trio of quarterbacks who started games for last year’s 4-12 club will return, including 2012 first-round draft pick Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins.

Head coach Jay Gruden said last month during the NFL scouting combine that Griffin would enter the season as the starter.

Griffin, who dislocated his ankle in Week 2 against Jacksonville, moved in and out of the starting lineup last season. He finished 2-5 as a starter for a club that was last in the NFC East for the sixth time in seven seasons.

When Griffin went down, Cousins relieved him and led Washington to a Week 2 win, but then went 0-4 before being pulled at halftime against Tennessee.

McCoy engineered a comeback win over the Titans and an upset victory the following week at Dallas before Griffin returned.

McCoy would later start games from Week 13-15 before being placed on injured reserve due to a neck injury.

Washington owns the fifth overall pick in the upcoming draft. Recent speculation has centred on what the team might do if Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota of Oregon is available.

McCoy is entering his sixth NFL season and his second with the Redskins after joining the team as an unrestricted free agent last April. In 33 career games with 25 starts, he has completed 501 of 831 passes (60.3 per cent) for 5,458 yards, 25 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.

McCoy played at Texas (2006-09), completing 1,157 of 1,645 career passes for 13,253 yards with 112 touchdowns and 45 interceptions. He added 447 rushing attempts for 1,571 yards and 20 touchdowns.

A third-round pick by Cleveland in 2010, McCoy played three seasons for the Browns before being traded to San Francisco in April 2013.
