So what are your kids doing this summer?

If you're looking for something that keeps them out of trouble and teaches them some great life lessons, get them involved in some of the great junior golf programs that exist in this country.

If you don't, where do you think Canada's next PGA Tour stars are coming from? For the past several years, and perhaps for a few more, it’s been Weir, Ames and then a big black hole.

Yes, Jon Mills has plugging away, and so has David Hearn but it’s slim pickings at the top of the pyramid.

But forget about that for a moment and consider this: What if they keep building golf courses and nobody came?

We're looking at a lot of fine land that will be returned to the plough. But fear not, as there are some great things being done to make the game attractive to young boys and girls.

Silver Lakes Golf Club near Newmarket, Ontario has a beach volleyball court with a professional instructor to provide a diversion when the attention span falters with they younger crowd. The best thing about Silver Lakes is it’s easy to walk for everyone. And yes, they encourage walking.

I mentioned Beacon Hall in Aurora, Ontario a few weeks back. They have a finely tuned caddy program which is carefully structured, monitored and executed by staff. And there are some amazing things happening in the Vancouver area.

The Westwood Plateau Academy is run by John Aasen. They have programs for boys and girls 4-7, 8-11 and 12-18. They'll churn through 300 kids a year and will even send one or two off to college on a golf scholarship.

And consider what's happening at Riverway Golf Course in Burnaby, BC. They have an arrangement with area high schools involving Riverway's instructors in Grade 10 physical education programs. And in another program they drill all the way down to Grade 5 by sending instructors to 10 area schools.

This is just a tiny sampling of what's going on across the country. And it’s being driven by those who care about the future of the game.

So get your kids off the computer this summer and find a golf program that fits your needs.
