You might not believe it, I might not believe it, but Tiger Woods believes it and maybe that’s all that matters.
Despite not having won a major championship since 2008, and despite not having played competitive golf in more than a year, Woods told PBS’ Charlie Rose that he believes he can get four more majors to tie Jack Nicklaus at 18…and that he doesn’t plan to stop there.
Near the end of transcript of the interview posted to CBS this morning, Rose wonders if Tiger thinks Nicklaus is still within reach:
Rose: Do you believe you’ll get 18 majors?
Woods: To be honest with you, no.
Rose: You don’t?
Woods: No.
Rose: You’ve accepted that?
Woods: I’ve accepted I’m going to get more.
Woods’ last major victory came at the 2008 US Open. His last PGA victories of any kind came in the 2013 season when he won five times.
In early October Woods, who is now 40 years old, declared himself ready to return and compete, only to later withdraw saying that his game isn’t yet ready for PGA events.
Only 36 majors in the history of golf have been won by players age 40 and over.
