STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Peter Forsberg has cancelled his comeback with Sweden's national team because of a foot and ankle injury, saying it could spell the end of his hockey career.
The 34-year-old former NHL star left practice late Monday after just over an hour on the ice when his injury acted up again.
"If I can't play at all this season, it's probably time to pack up for good," Forsberg told Swedish news agency TT.
Team doctor Born Waldeback said Forsberg's injury, which affects both the foot and the ankle, "is pretty complex," but still lacks a proper diagnosis.
"Treatment is still going on, so it's not all lost yet," Waldeback said.
After weeks of practice with his hometown club Modo, Forsberg had been set to play for Sweden against Russia on Thursday in the Karjala Cup.
Forsberg apologized to his fans for pulling out of the tournament, but said he didn't want to take part if he could not perform at his best.
"I'm not planning on skating around and embarrassing myself like I have for many years," Forsberg said.
Forsberg won two Stanley Cups with the Colorado Avalanche and was named the NHL's MVP in 2003 after scoring 29 goals and adding 77 assists.
Injuries have plagued him in recent years and he hasn't played more than 60 games in a season since suiting up for 75 contests in 2002-03 with the Avalanche.
The Swede finished last year with the Nashville Predators and is an unrestricted free agent.
