There are times when it feels like the province of Alberta isn't big enough maybe even the country isn't large enough for the both of them. Them being the province's two NHL's teams, the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers.
Well how about both Edmonton and Calgary staying in the same hotel? Sounds unlikely but not impossible. That's because on Tuesday night both the Oilers and Flames spent the night in Dallas. The Oilers arrived at 1 a.m. from Nashville and the Flames at 3:30 a.m. from Phoenix.
Now Dallas is a big city so how in the name of crude oil do these teams end up bunking down doors away from each other? The hotel is very close to the American Airlines arena. Also this is where each team stays on a regular basis so there wasn't any reason to change locales even if they didn't like the hotel guests.
But wouldn't it be an interesting conversation if Ales Hemsky and Robyn Regehr were to bump into each other? "So exactly why do you run my face into the glass every chance you get?"
Or if Dion Phaneuf and Ethan Moreau lined up behind the one another for a coffee and are forced to make small talk? "Yeah, you really surprised me with that first fight or that was nice of you to take your helmet and visor off for the rematch appreciate it."
Two teams.
One hotel.
The Oilers and Flames won't get this close until they meet again on April Fools Day. Only that night, it will be on the ice and not in the lobby.

Abetter question of flamers players is "how did you get your sleeping G.M to give all you avg players with avg talent soo much money for so long a term?" followed by "Do you guys have any propects and how will you win anything with such mediocrity up and down the lineup?"a team that hasnt changed in 5 years...something to think about while Moreau lands another K.O on lady dionne...
We have a table ready for the bitter stallion party. Dining alone again, I see.
Ummmmm... I think they play each other next on the 29th of March. Beyond that, my guess is that most hockey players have a good off-ice relationship with each other. I don't think that staying in the same hotel is much of an issue.
Or a better Question, "why are the Oil made of Glass?", or "why doesn't anyone of note want to play for you?"....... avg players/avg talent lol!, so if that's the case why is Calgary ahead of the Oil in the standings then? maybe The Oil have less then average players? hmmmmm something to think about.
wow stallion you really must be lost in the fog...or was that just the pitiful attempt at covering up the hope that Lowe could make some other mediocre rfa offer that was ridiculously over priced?
Thats funny... If I remember quickly we made it to the playoffs the last 3 years...... The Oil slipped in there once with mediocrity.. It dont matter the skills my friend but how they gel. Have fun again this season on the outside looking in!
Aren't hockey players known for getting leaving their differences on the ice and getting along outside the rink? Having two teams at the same hotel probably happens more than you would think.
What average Flames players have been signed to long term contracts by the way? I didn't hear anything about Huselius getting a 10 year extension. I see star players signing reasonable lenght contracts for less than they are worth and I love it!
Lame, Gene. Lest we wonder what Godard would say to Stortini if they ran into each other - "Hey Zach, why do you insist on hugging me when I'm pounding the crap out of you?" Or what if old-man Nolan ran into Stortini? Baby Zach would probably run away screaming. Gene, you point to two things (like Phaneuf and a visor? - LAME) to somehow compensate for the fact that over the last few seasons, the Flames have PWND the Oilers. The Oilers are already a laughing stock, they don't need your help.
As to Stallion's remarks, before he makes any accusations about over-paid mediocrity, let's look at the Oiler's over-paid roster:
Roloson: A 40-year-old back-up making 4 million
Pisani: A good playoff run lands him an inflated contract
Penner: enough said
Souray: An oft-injured defenceman who had one good year, tested the UFA market, no one took him (read: everyone saw right through him), so the Oilers took him and touted him as a big free-agent coup.
Most teams would love to have a Regehr, Phaneuf, Iginla, or a Kipper on their roster - ESPECIALLY THE OILERS, and you know it.
And as for the prospects - you have Gagner, whoop-dee-doo. Have fun holding onto him when he makes RFA, thanks to Lowe's Penner mess. And how's Schremp doing these days? Oh, right, a bust, who just last year was going to be the Oilers' savior.
mcx2ride, who's your team? The Canucks or Flames? Either way all you're getting is 2 more weeks of hockey this year and a mess of trouble next (if you're a Flames fan not enough cap room.) Not that it really matters Detroit, Dallas, San Jose, and Anaheim are going to steamroll to the second round in the playoffs this year. A NW division's team's only hope of the second round is playing another team in the division.
We'll keep a tee time for you.
prospects never look consistent or stand out much(except gagner) in their development years...thats what makes them prospects...do you really think K-Lowe will let gagner get away at 21???give your heads a shake...
If anyone bothers to check the Oilers payrol is higher than the Flames and will be next year also, for mediocrity.
Calgary's two best players, Phaneuf and Iginla, are from Edmonton and grew up DREAMING ABOUT PLAYING FOR THE OIL, just like every other kid from Edmonton.
How does it feel knowing your best players have a deep rooted love for your best rival?
Jayzoo: Well, it really doesn't make a hill of beans worth of difference, does it? Those players seem to shine playing against the Oilers, so I think they've gotten over this "deep rooted love" you speak of. If they loved the Oilers that much, they would be clamoring to get back to 'live their dream'. I guess they found something they knew Edmonton just could not provide anymore - like a chance at winning! Whatever the reason, your argument is weak at best, as Edmonton-born players are not beating down the door to come back home. Now, it seems they are looking for ways to stay away!
I'm sure they keep it on the ice, maybe if they played each others 48hr less then maybe some things would be said but just words!
Just Like to say sounds like some of the Calgary Fans watch out the next 2 years Oilers will be Contenders instead of Pretenders!
Anywhooo, Just wanna say Go Oilers, Ecspecially against the c's!
Cause this is Oil Country Albertas Team Go Oilers cause were taking 8 seeds this year, and after that well anything can happen FOLKS! :)
