Kyle Wellwood has been struck by the injury bug yet again, this time during an off-season training session, the Toronto Maple Leafs forward told the Windsor Star.

Wellwood, who will be a restricted free agent on July 1, told the paper that he broke a bone in his right foot during a workout two weeks ago with a Windsor Spitfires trainer.

"I was playing indoor soccer and it (my foot) sort of cracked," Wellwood said. "We went to the hospital and they said there was a crack in the foot."

The 25-year old centre said he immediately visited the Maple Leafs' medical staff and expects to be ready for training camp in the fall.

"I should have a full recovery (by camp)," Wellwood said. "I'll have a cast on for the next four or five days and then I'll get a walking boot for a few weeks."

Wellwood has been an easy target for media and fans in LeafsNation over the last two seasons for his lack of fitness. After suffering a sports hernia during the 2006-07 season, the Windsor native played in only 48 games. He was plagued by injuries again last season, with groin problems limiting him to only 59 games.
