Fernando Pisani got a bad break Monday night against the Detroit Red Wings, literally. The Edmonton Oilers centre broke his ankle when he fell awkwardly into the end board following a forecheck in the third period against Red Wings defenceman Niklas Lidstrom.

"His ankle is broken and he's out for a long time," said head coach Craig MacTavish after the game.

Pisani was helped off the ice after his left foot slammed into the boards. A post-game X-ray revealed the break. Although no surgery will be required, Pisani, who accompanied the team to Columbus, is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

Pisani was one of the NHL's feel-good stories last year after battling back from ulcerative colitis. The disease nearly cost him his career but the Edmontonian returned to play 56 games last season.
