The Ottawa Senators could be without several key players when they host the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night.
Jason Spezza left Monday's practice early with some discomfort in his back and head. Coach Craig Hartsburg said that Spezza's status for the Capitals game will be determined after Tuesday's morning skate. Spezza, however, seemed more optimistic when speaking to reporters, saying that he would likely be able to suit up against the Capitals. The centre said he arrived to the rink on Monday morning with some pain in his back and he didn't want to push himself during a practice.
Anton Volchenkov will not be ready to return from an upper body injury that has caused him to miss seven straight games. Hartsburg said that an extra week off for the all-star break should be beneficial for Volchenkov.
Meanwhile, Shean Donovan will also miss Tuesday's game with a lower body injury he suffered when crashing into the boards during the fastest skater competition at the Sens Skills event on Sunday afternoon.
Jason Smith missed practice with a lower body injury and he is questionable to play against the Capitals. Hartsburg said the club hasn't decided to call up anyone from AHL Binghamton at this point in time.
NOTES: The Senators will continue to ride the hot hand in the net, even if "hot" is relative in Ottawa. Goaltender Brian Elliott will make his fifth consecutive start in goal Tuesday. ... Donovan will cash in on a winning bet he made with the Daniel Alfredsson. The Sens captain will clear off Donovan's backyard rink Monday as part of a bet he lost earlier this month when Team Canada beat Team Sweden at the world junior hockey championship.
