The National Hockey League has suspended Pittsburgh Penguins forward one game for coming off the bench to initiate a fight with Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn on Saturday.
The suspension comes after Leafs general manager Brian Burke had contacted the league Saturday night to request a review of the incident. Kennedy had tried to provoke Schenn into a fight during a line change in the second period after the rookie defenceman hit Penguins star Evgeni Malkin with a clean hit by the Pittsburgh bench.
Kennedy and Schenn squared-off with both receiving five-minute majors for fighting, but no other penalties were handed out.
The Leafs beat the Penguins 5-4 and Schenn was named the first star of the game.
