Ottawa Senators goaltender Martin Gerber headlines a long list of players placed on waivers Tuesday, joining Gary Roberts, Brendan Morrison and Miroslav Satan in a sign that teams may be trying to clear cap space ahead of Wednesday's trade deadline.
Gerber was never able to lock down the starting role since signing with the Senators as a free agent in the summer of 2006. The Swiss netminder has split this season between Ottawa and Binghamton of the American Hockey League, posting a 4-9 record in only 14 games with the Sens. He had been placed on waivers last month, but cleared and was assigned to the AHL.
The Tampa Bay Lightning had acquired the rights to Roberts from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the off-season, but a disappointing campaign for the Bolts makes the veteran winger expendable. In 30 games this season, the North York, Ontario native has four goals and three assists with a minus-11 rating while battling groin injuries.
A long-time member of the Vancouver Canucks, Morrison signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Anaheim Ducks last summer. The diminutive centre has registered 10 goals and 12 assists in 61 appearances with the Ducks, who many feel will be sellers on Wednesday's trade deadline.
It appears Satan isn't the answer to the winger shortage in Pittsburgh. The Penguins place the Czech forward on waivers Tuesday, along with his 17 goals and 19 assists in 64 games. Satan had signed a one-year deal in Pittsburgh in the off-season.
Other players placed on waivers as of noon Tuesday are Brendan Bell (Ottawa Senators), Erik Reitz and Aaron Voros (New York Rangers), Peter Olvecky (Minnesota Wild), Jon Sim (New York Islanders), Eric Perrin (Atlanta Thrashers) and Craig Adams (Chicago Blackhawks). The deadline date to claim these players is Wednesday at noon.
