The who's who of the NHL has descended upon Montreal for this weekend's amateur draft. There are lots of rumours circulating.
Here are some of the more prevalent ones:
One league executive told me, don't believe reports that Oren Koules has won his tug-of-war with Tampa Bay Lightning co-owner Len Barie. Sportsnet has learned Barie is still very much in the picture and has the power to veto a trade. What that means is that if Koules and GM Brian Lawton want to trade superstar Vincent Lecavalier, they'll have to get Barie's consent first.
Canadiens' owner George Gillett left the Board of Governors meeting in a hurry Wednesday morning. It's believed Gillett spoke briefly to the NHL governors and then left. Gillett said he was feeling ill to the group of media waiting outside and did not address the agreement in principal he reached with the Molson family on the sale of the Montreal Canadiens and the Bell Center.
Speaking of the Canadiens, it's is believed head coach Jacques Martin is getting close to putting the final touches on his coaching staff. Perry Pearn, his assistant with the Senators, is the number one candidate to replace Doug Jarvis. Another important role is the goalie coach. I was informed it'll come down to Pierre Groulx (Florida Panther) or Dave Marcoux (Calgary Flames).
I just heard the LA Kings want to trade the fifth pick overall and get a player than can help them now.
Here's one for all you Patrick Roy fans: One source informed me that if Quebecor had purchased the Montreal Canadiens, they would have cleaned house and made Patrick Roy GM and brought back Guy Carbonneau as head coach.
