MONTREAL — Joe Sakic has made a decision regarding his hockey future, but an announcement on the Colorado Avalanche captain’s future won’t come until next week at the earliest.

Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman said Friday night he met with Sakic recently in Denver where Sakic revealed to him what his plans are.

Sherman added it could be a week or more before a public announcement is made.

The team said Sakic, who turns 40 on July 7, is going on a family vacation and nothing will be announced until at least after he returns.

"He made his intentions clear, and in the coming weeks it will be addressed," Sherman said.

In a conversation with The Denver Post late last week, Sakic said he’s feeling "real good" health-wise, and added he has become a devoted practitioner of yoga and pilates.

Sakic underwent surgery for a herniated disc last season and additional surgery to repair three broken fingers from a snow-blower accident.

Unless salary cap space is created via trades, Sakic would probably have to take a sizable pay cut from his previous salary if he plays again with Colorado for his 21st NHL season.

Sakic made $6 million last season.
