Dany Heatley wasn't sure he wanted to come to Edmonton.
Well now Heatley doesn't have to worry about that anymore because the Oilers don't want him.
"I informed Bryan Murray last Sunday or Monday that we no longer would be involved in a trade with Dany Heatley and it was time to move on," said Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini.
Time hasn't moved on very fast since Edmonton thought they had a deal in place with Ottawa on June 29th to get the former 50-goal scorer.
"Early on I felt it would happen.," said Tambellini. "As time went on we had to make a decision and I'm comfortable with that."
But what the Oilers GM isn't comfortable with are suggestions that Edmonton should stop grovelling for the Senator and that if Heatley didn't want to play with the Oilers, then Tambellini and Oilers president of hockey operations, Kevin Lowe, shouldn't have flown out on Canada Day to Kelowna, B.C. for a face-to-face meeting with Heatley.
They also shouldn't have sent him a video extolling the virtues of being an Oiler and the good that could come out of spending the winter in Edmonton.
"We said right from the start that we were going to take an aggressive approach and we wanted to answer any questions he might have," said Tambellini. "We wanted to cover all bases and it was worth doing that for someone in the prime of his career. Part of the package of information a team gives to a prospective player often includes a video. I never felt like we were being held hostage because there is no one player that is bigger than the Oilers."
Tambellini went on to discuss what he was told by Heatley about why the winger wouldn't lift his no-trade clause to come to Edmonton.
"Dany and his people were just not ready to make a decision. We know Dany from previous tournaments involving Canada. We hoped we could get there with him but that's life with a no-trade clause, so we wish him luck."
Luck is something the person or persons may need on their side if the Oilers GM ever finds out who leaked the deal that would have sent Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid to the Senators in return for Heatley.
"It was very unprofessional whoever did that," said Tambellini. "The name or names will eventually come out and I'm not very happy."
