Former NHL star Steve Larmer is very concerned about the fate of the NHL Players Association.
In a letter of resignation to the NHLPA obtained by Hockeycentral, Larmer wrote: The NHLPA constitution that was created in 2005 has now been suspended. Certain players with the assistance of their agents have, in a sense, hijacked the union. They have used the cover of an operations review to paralyze the NHLPA staff and placed certain employees under surveillance. It is my understanding that the former executive director Paul Kelly has communicated with Chris Chelios and Shawn Horcoff and others directing them to investigate the affairs of the PA."
Larmer goes on to say they have taken it upon themselves to suspend the office of the ombudsman, divisional player reps and the PA's adviser board.
Larmer defends Ian Penny, who was either fired or resigned from the post of interim executive director of the NHLPA this week, writing" this is the man who blew the whistle on Ted Saskin and tried to keep Paul Kelly on the straight and narrow for the betterment of the players."
Larmer also wrote it is his understanding Donald Fehr, the head of the Major League Baseball players' union, made himself available for an NHLPA conference call, but no time was made available for Fehr to join the conversation.
