The Washington Capitals and impending restricted free agent forward Nicklas Backstrom have come to terms on a contract extension, sources tell Sportsnet.

The Capitals have scheduled a Monday press conference.

In 82 games this season, the 22-year-old native of Gavle, Sweden had 33 goals, 101 points and was a plus-37.

The center was drafted 4th overall by the Capitals in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
