CALGARY -- Hockey Hall of Famer Michel Goulet is joining the Calgary Flames as its western professional scout, the NHL team said Wednesday.
The longtime Quebec Nordiques star will be based in Denver and report to assistant general manager Jay Feaster.
Goulet was fired from his role as assistant GM with the Colorado Avalanche in June 2009 after 15 years with the organization in scouting and management.
He was vice-president of player personnel when the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 1996 and 2001.
"Michel Goulet has enjoyed an outstanding career in professional hockey, first as an incredibly talented player and later as a talent evaluator and administrator," Flames GM Darryl Sutter said in a release. "He has helped assemble championship teams at both the NHL and AHL affiliate level, and he brings a wealth of knowledge to our pro scouting ranks."
Goulet was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998 after scoring 548 goals with 604 assists in 1,089 games over 15 NHL seasons.
The Flames also beefed up their amateur scouting staff by hiring Ari Haanpaa based out of Finland and Fred Parker based in Ottawa.
