The Detroit Red Wings have scheduled a press conference for noon on Aug 31 where it is expected they will announced the hiring of Chris Chelios to their front office.

Chelios' new position is yet to be determined. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Aug. 28 that the team is still unsure what Chelios' title and specific responsibilities will be.

More details are expected to be announced on Aug 31.

"I told him if he wanted to get involved in the front office, if he's looking to learn the business, we'd have a spot for him and evolve his role," Holland told MLive.com on Aug.6. "Players that have been here a long time and been a part of us being successful, if I got a job open, I'd prefer to have one of our former players who helped us win get it rather than going outside the organization."

Chelios, 48, spent nine plus seasons with the Red Wings. The veteran defenseman played most of last season with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL and spent seven games with the Atlanta Thrashers of the NHL. The three-time Norris Trophy winner has yet to announce his retirement after 26 seasons in the NHL.

Chelios was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1981. The veteran defenceman spent six seasons in Montreal and then spent nine years with the Chicago Blackhawks (1990-99). Chelios, the all-time leader in NHL playoff games, scored 185 goals, 763 assists during his career. The 11-time all-star won three Stanley Cups during his career, with Detroit in 2002 and 2008 and Montreal in 1986.
