The New York Rangers and defenceman Marc Staal are said to be close to reaching an agreement, that would keep the Thunder Bay, Ont. native on Broadway.

Staal, 23, was the Rangers first pick in the 2005 NHL entry draft, chosen 12th overall.

He scored career highs in goals, eight, and points, 27, in 82 games last season.

In three years with the Rangers, Staal has 13 goals and 52 points and is considered an excellent defensive defender.
