Charges have been laid against former Oilers captain Jason Smith, who was arrested for domestic assault in Calgary according to online reports.

In the Sun Media report, Smith is alleged to have assaulted his wife and daughter. The story says Smith faces a charge that he confined his wife at the time the altercation took place on Aug. 10.

Smith was released after his arrest by police with stipulations that he make no contact with the alleged victims and family living in Alberta and have no consumption of alcohol or non-prescription drugs.

His lawyer, Alain Hepner, said that his client has no criminal record and that the charges are "devastating," to Smith and his family.

"There is another side to the story -- I can't divulge anything yet," Hepner said.

"The charges conjure up images so overdone and exaggerated ... what's conjured up by the allegations is not an accurate reflection of what will surface in the court case."

Smith’s case returns to court Sept. 17.

Smith also played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and recently the Ottawa Senators.
