Montreal Canadiens' defenceman Andrei Markov told reporters on Tuesday he is not ready to return to the line-up.
The Russian blueliner has been practicing for two weeks and was hoping to resume play on Thursday against the New Jersey Devils but says he doesn't feel strong enough. Markov underwent reconstructive knee surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee during the off-season. No timetable has been set for his return.
Markov registered 34 points in 45 games for the Canadiens last season.
Team doctors estimated Markov would be out until late October or early November after he was hurt in the opening game of the NHL Eastern Conference semifinals against Pittsburgh.
Without Markov, the Canadiens power play has sputtered, with one goal in 17 chances through five games. Martin also said struggling defenceman Jaroslav Spacek will no longer play the right point with the man advantage, but did not say who would replace him.
