What do you get when you cross a rookie GM with a financially strapped team that is for sale?

You get one of the NHL’s hottest teams, that’s what.

The Dallas Stars have won six straight and have climbed to sixth overall in the standings. Led by impending free-agent centre Brad Richards and goaltender Kari Lehtonen, the Stars are 8-1-1 in their past 10.

TW LW Team Our Take
2 The Red Wings invade the West picking up five of a possible six points while welcoming back veterans Kris Draper and Chris Osgood in the process.
1 Alexander Ovechkin puts a halt to his career-worst scoring drought with his first goal in 10 games.
3 With a league-leading 46 points in 28 games, Sidney Crosby is on pace for a career best 135 points this season.
4 Danny Briere pops three goals in four games including the game-winner against the Islanders Sunday.
5 Carey Price gives up an early softie and then slams the door shut on the Sharks as his miracle comeback season continues.
11 Stephane Robidas’ third goal of the season in OT gives the Stars their sixth win in a row.
7 Steven Stamkos hasn’t scored in five straight games, but his running mate, Martin St-Louis, has five points in three games.
10 Ilya Bryzgalov shuts out his former team, the Anaheim Ducks, for the third time since joining the Coyotes who are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.
6 The Rangers win two straight and four of five before running into a desperate Ottawa Senators club Sunday resulting in a 3-1 loss.
8 The defending champs look like they are finally starting to hit stride, but then they lose Patrick Kane to a “lower body injury” in a 4-2 win over the Flames.
13 Former Hawk Andrew Ladd continues to be one of the great quiet stories in the league scoring his ninth goal of the year in a 3-1 win over the Caps.
17 Tim Thomas makes 38 saves, but surrenders the game-winning goal in a shootout against the Leafs.
12 The Canucks win four straight and appeared to be finally finding their game before suffering a loss to the Blues.
14 Milan Hejduk runs his points streak to seven games for the Avs, who have collected points in seven of 10 games.
22 Anders Lindback steps in and fills the goaltending void with Pekka Rinne on the shelf.
9 The Blue Jackets were one of the league’s biggest surprises early on, but five straight losses has them sliding back to the pack and barely hanging on to a playoff position.
15 Alex Steen’s second goal of the game gives the Blues a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Canucks in Vancouver.
18 The Kings had been spiraling downward, but a win over the Red Wings is cause for celebration.
16 The Sharks have not won two games in a row since Nov. 13 and 15.
21 Defenceman Joe Corvo nets a goal and sets up another, but his output isn’t enough as the Canes lose to Nashville.
19 A pulled groin has put veteran winger Teemu Selanne on the shelf for five of his team’s past seven games.
20 The Wild is 1-5-2 in its last eight games and GM Chuck Fletcher is threatening to make changes.
23 Chris Kelly scores all three goals – his first NHL hat trick – as the Senators beat the Rangers 3-1.
24 Thomas Vanek scores the game-winning goal in a shootout as the Sabres beat the Sens 1-0. Vanek’s production takes some of the heat off goaltender Ryan Miller who has been carrying the Sabres.
29 First overall pick Taylor Hall fires four goals in four games including the winner against St. Louis Saturday.
27 A big win over Minnesota is followed by a crushing loss to the Blackhawks as the Flames basically continue to spin their wheels.
28 Phil Kessel finally scores against his former team as the Leafs beat the Bruins in a shootout.
25 Injuries continue to plague the Panthers, but Michael Frolik scores twice, including the shootout winner, in a victory over the Coyotes.
26 The Devils blow two one-goal leads in a loss to the Flyers Saturday as their woeful season continues.
30 The Islanders have not scored a power play goal in 11 games going 0-for-36 in that span.
