Sam Gagner's season is over.
The Edmonton Oilers forward will miss the rest of the season after undergoing hand surgery Thursday. Gagner was injured when team-mate Ryan Jones accidentally cut Gagner's left hand open in Wednesday night's contest with the Washington Capitals. He was sitting on the bench when Jones hopped over the boards and unintentionally cut open Gagner's hand. Gagner left the game briefly, but later returned.
The former first-round pick was tied with Taylor Hall and Ales Hemsky for the team lead in points and was on the verge of having career-high numbers in goals and points. Gagner had 15 goals and 27 assists for 42 points. The No. 42 has become a bad omen for the Oilers when it comes to points. Gagner is the third Oiler to go down with an injury after hitting that number of points. First was Hemsky, who hurt his shoulder Mar. 1 against Nashville and will now be out 2-3 weeks. Two days later, Taylor Hall suffered a season-ending high ankle sprain in a fight with Derek Dorsett of the Blue Jackets. The 21-year-old forward is said to be in good spirits after his surgery.
