NEW YORK - The New York Rangers have signed Anton Stralman to help fill in on an injury-hit defensive unit.
The 25-year-old Stralman, who has played in 212 NHL games, agreed to a one-year deal on Saturday worth US$900,000. He had a training camp tryout with the New Jersey Devils but didn't earn a spot.
New York is missing top defenceman Marc Staal, who is out indefinitely because of a concussion sustained last season. Michael Sauer has also been sidelined at times this season by a shoulder injury.
In four seasons with Toronto and Columbus, Stralman had 11 goals and 63 assists. He had one goal and 17 assists last season in 51 games with Columbus.
The Rangers also placed forwards Mike Rupp (knee) and Wojtek Wolski (groin) on the injured list. Rupp will undergo arthroscopic surgery within the next week.
