Hedman, Lightning strike a deal
The Tampa Bay Lightning have resigned Victor Hedman through the 2016-2017 season.
The deal will see the 20-year-old Swede earn $20 million over the next five years with an annual cap hit of $4 million.
"We are extremely pleased to announce that we have agreed to a five-year contract with Victor," Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement Tuesday.
"He has shown tremendous growth as a player in just more than two seasons in the NHL while also becoming a key member of our team. We look forward to his continued development in a Lightning uniform."
After strong rookie and sophomore campaigns, the six-foot-six defenceman has struggled this season. In 20 games, Hedman has generated just two points and is minus-5.
Hedman was the second-overall pick in 2009. In 173 NHL games he has nine goals, 39 assists for 148 points with 169 penalty minutes.
