MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens have locked up one of their top defencemen, signing Josh Gorges to a six-year contract extension Sunday.
Gorges leads the team with a plus-6 rating and 101 blocked shots over 39 games. He also has 10 points (one goal, nine assists).
The 27-year-old native of Kelowna, B.C., is in his sixth season with the Canadiens. He has 10 goals and 59 assists over that span.
He was named an assistant captain this season.
Montreal acquired Gorges in 2007 from the San Jose Sharks along with a first-round pick (Max Pacioretty) in exchange for Craig Rivet and a fifth-round pick (Jason Demers).
