The Montreal Canadiens have announced that team captain Brian Gionta underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to repair a tear in his right bicep.

Gionta suffered the injury during the third period of Tuesday's 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues and will be out indefinitely.

Tuesday's game against the Blues was the 32-year-old's second game back after missing 10 games in December with a groin injury.

In 31 games this season Gionta has eight goals, seven assists and is minus-7.
