Frans Nielsen is staying on Long Island for a little while longer.

Nielsen signed a four-year contract extension with the New York Islanders, the team announced on Wednesday, keeping him with the club through the 2015-16 season.

The 27-year-old forward from Herning, Denmark, was drafted 87th overall in 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Islanders.

Nielsen is in his sixth season with the team and has 46 goals and 99 assists in 289 NHL games. He lead the league last season with seven short-handed goals.

"We’re thrilled that Frans has committed to the Islanders for the next four years," Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said in a press release. "He has been a key part of our young core for the past six seasons and become one of the better two-way forwards in the league."

Nielsen was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. This season, Nielsen has nine goals and 16 assists in 52 games.
