Leafs' MacArthur works retail

If you went shopping at a Toronto area sporting goods store recently, you may have been serviced by Toronto Maple Leafs forward Clarke MacArthur.

Posing as Sport Check salesperson “Phil Johnson,” his Employee of the Month status explaining away the video cameras, MacArthur dives undercover to work a retail shift at a mall outlet. It’s a good-natured prank all in the name of going viral and simultaneously promoting the Leafs and, yes, a certain sporting goods chain. Though the two-and-half-minute bit works foremost as an extended commercial, these types of stunts do wonders for displaying some NHLer personality. Smart move.

Despite wearing the standard-issue black golf shirt, “Phil,” whose relentless A-B-C sales style leads to an estimated four or five sales in 40 minutes, does get recognized by a couple customers as the Leafs’ forward.

“Same hair,” he reasons.

Phil, who claims to be “more of a racquetball guy,” manages to talk puck with a few of the clueless shoppers.

“Go, Habs, go,” one buyer says to MacArthur’s face.

The big win comes when he actually convinces a guy to purchase a No. 16 Leafs sweater.

"How bout a MacArthur jersey? That guy’s on a bit of a roll huh?"
