The Detroit Red Wings are closing out a two-year extension with forward Todd Bertuzzi, reports Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos.

Pat Morris, Bertuzzi's agent, told the Detroit Free Press on Tuesday that the sides are close to a new deal and have been in discussions for the past month.

Bertuzzi, who is eligible to become a unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2011-12 season, is in the final year of a two-year contract where he has a salary cap hit of $1,937,500.

"I think Bert's been great all season… he's embraced everything we're about," Holland told the Detroit Free Press last month.

Bertuzzi has added a needed physical presence to the Red Wings offence and has drastically improved his defensive game since joining Detroit in 2007.

The veteran forward has 12 goals, 29 points and has a plus-21 rating in 54 games played this season.

The two-time all-star has spent time with the New York Islanders, Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers, Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames and Red Wings over his career.

Bertuzzi has 289 career goals and 713 points in 1,022 career games.
