Tuomo Ruutu won't be leaving Carolina any time soon.
The Hurricanes winger signed a four-year extension where Ruutu’s annual salary cap hit will be $4.75 million per season.
Ruutu was originally hoping to sign for six years, but Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford wasn't willing to commit for that length of time, according to Sportsnet's John Shannon.
The veteran Finnish forward, who was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after the season, was expected to be a hot commodity during Monday's trade deadline.
The deal will pay Ruutu $4 million in 2012-13, and $5 million per season in the 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
“Players like Tuomo are extremely difficult to replace, and it is very important for our franchise to keep him here long term,” said Rutherford. “Along with the physical elements and skill level that he brings on the ice, Tuomo is a popular leader in our locker room. We are very happy that he has committed to what we are building here, and is excited about what the future holds for the Hurricanes.”
Ruutu has 17 goals and 13 assists in 57 games this season.
The Hurricanes, who currently sit 15th place in the Eastern Conference, are still expected to be without Ruutu for another two weeks. Ruutu has been sidelined with an upper-body injury.
Carolina takes on the Anaheim Ducks Thursday.
