The OHL's Brampton Battalion strung together their second impressive multi-week winning-streak. Meanwhile, the defending Memorial Cup champion Spokane Chiefs are showing signs of their immense potential as the WHL's hot team this week.
Québec Major Junior Hockey League
Hot team: Rimouski Océanic
This year's Memorial Cup-hosts are beginning to show shades of a championship contender, particularly on home ice. The Océanic won all three games at home, extending their winning streak to five as they have now won seven of their last 10 games. Rimouski remains 22 points behind Québec for first in the Telus Eastern Division standings but the Océanic are starting to pick up the pace.
Hot player: Raffaele D'Orso, Val-d'Or Foreurs
The veteran goaltender showed glimpses of last season in a week where he shut down two very talented offensive teams in Montreal and Moncton. Through three wins, the workhorse goaltender allowed just four goals on 137 shots for a 0.971 save percentage. With three consecutive wins and five in their last 10, the Foreurs appear poised for a much better second-half.
Cold team: Halifax Mooseheads
A trip to Northern Québec did little to stop the bleeding for the Mooseheads, who dropped both contests at Val-d'Or and Rouyn-Noranda. Halifax has lost six straight games and won just twice in their last 10. With the recent emergence of the Foreurs, Halifax has the inside track on the first overall pick as they hold the fewest points at 31.
Cold player: Pierre-Luc Lessard, Baie-Comeau Drakkar
The overage defenceman and draft pick of the Ottawa Senators was ice cold last week. In two games, the offensive blue-liner failed to record a point and was a minus-6. Unless he is able to better steer his team down the stretch, the alternate captain of the Drakkar could be missing the playoffs in his final season of major junior.
Game of the week: Montreal Juniors vs. Gatineau Olympiques, Saturday
If the Montreal Juniors have any hopes of winning the Telus Western Division this season, they will need to beat teams like Gatineau down the stretch. Until recently, none of the four teams in the division made a real stake at the division crown. The Olympiques are one of the hottest teams in the league the last three weeks and have gained control of the division, leading Rouyn-Noranda by seven points and Montreal by nine. The Juniors have the depth of talent to make a run but much will depend on how they play against teams they're fighting with for the division crown.
Ontario Hockey League
Hot team: Brampton Battalion
The Brampton Battalion are at it again. After starting 2009 losing three of four, Brampton has since rattled off 10 consecutive victories, six shy of the 16-game winning-streak they posted in October and November earlier this season. The main difference has been in goal where newcomer Thomas McCollum may have provided the team with the missing link. His shutout over Oshawa was his third blank-sheet in four games dating back to the previous week.
Hot player: John Tavares, London Knights
The league's leading scorer, Tavares continued widening the gap from the rest of the pack in the scoring race. In four games, Tavares scored six times and added four assists with a plus-3 rating. He scored the game-winner over Belleville on Saturday night. Tavares now has a nine-point lead on Eric Tangradi and Taylor Hall in league scoring.
Cold team: Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds
While the results haven't changed, the Soo Greyhounds are improving as they have begun eliminating the lopsided losses. The team, however, has won just once in their last 10 games as their losing streak now hits eight games. A shortened week for the All-Star Game festivities could help the team regroup for the stretch run.
Cold player: James DeLory, Oshawa Generals
Former teammate of Tavares, the hot player of the week, overage defenceman DeLory was on the opposite end of the spectrum. The captain of the rebuilding Generals didn't do much to help the team's cause last week, going pointless with a stunning minus-8 rating through three games. If the Generals are going to make the playoffs this season, they will need much more from their veterans like DeLory.
Game of the week: Windsor Spitfires vs. London Knights, Friday
Match-ups don't get much bigger than this as the Windsor Spitfires hit the road for a pivotal contest with rival London. The Knights loaded up at the trade deadline, adding players such as Tavares and Michael Del Zotto to have a chance to beat the Spitfires, should they meet in the playoffs. Windsor holds a 13-point lead on the Knights for top spot in the Western Conference standings through 51 games played. This will be the first time these two teams meet after both teams made some big trades in advance of the trade deadline. The two teams will meet twice more this season.
Western Hockey League
Hot team: Spokane Chiefs
Everyone knew the Chiefs would be a strong team once again this season but the turnover on their roster, including head coach Bill Peters, provided some early season bumps. Spokane is clicking now though, winners of their last 11 games. The Chiefs outscored the opposition 21-1 through three wins last week, a sure sign the dominant team is back to form.
Hot player: Drayson Bowman, Spokane Chiefs
It appears that slumbering stars Bowman and Mitch Wahl have awoken this season, which is a scary thought for the rest of the league. Bowman scored five goals and five assists in three games last week to go along with a plus-6 rating. The Carolina Hurricanes' prospect will be relied upon to provide much the same as the Chiefs look to defend their Memorial Cup crown.
Cold team: Portland Winter Hawks
The long season may feel like it's getting longer for the rebuilding Portland Winter Hawks. Portland lost all three games last week, extending their regulation losing streak to seven and 11 consecutive losses overall. The Winter Hawks haven't graced the win column since early January when they won three consecutive games over Seattle, Everett and Spokane.
Cold player: Ryan Holfeld, Medicine Hat Tigers
The Tigers' starting goaltender has had bouts with consistency this season and last week was no different. Through four games, Holfeld was beat 18 times on 126 shots for a 0.857 save percentage. Although his team won one of those four games, Holfeld will need to be the strong pillar holding the team together if Medicine Hat is going to become a dangerous team down the stretch.
Game of the week: Vancouver Giants vs. Spokane Chiefs, Friday
Two of the league's top teams will meet for only the first time this season. Vancouver and Spokane engaged in an entertaining six-game playoff series in the second round last year, with Spokane eventually emerging as the league and Memorial Cup champions. The Giants seemingly have the upper hand this season, as they lead the Western Conference standings with 91 points, 22 ahead of Spokane. One team's winning-streak will come to an end as the Chiefs' streak sits at 11, three more than the Giants' eight consecutive wins. This could once again be a playoff preview.
