Russians get another crack at the 'Q'
November 18, 2009
The Selects and QMJHL all stars will meet again Wednesday in Shawinigan, Que., before the annual six-game series heads to the Ontario Hockey League.
Watch it live on Rogers Sportsnet beginning at 7 p.m. ET
Marco Scandella of the Val d'Or Foreurs will not participate for Team QMJHL in Game 2 of the series. Taylor Beck of the Guelph Storm has been added to the Team OHL roster for Game 3 of the series taking place in Barrie on Nov. 19.
Scandella, a 19-year-old defenceman from Montreal, QC, was named an assistant captain for both QMJHL games of the Super Series, but will sit out Wednesday as a precaution after missing the game Monday night in Drummondville due to sudden illness.
Beck replaces Storm teammate Michael Latta who is unable to participate due to injury.
Team QMJHL defeated Team Russia in game one of the series 3-1 Monday night in Drummondville, QC, with Gabriel Bourque of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar named QMJHL Player of the Game.
In the opener on Monday, Gabriel Bourque scored the winner as the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League all-stars won the opening game of the Super Series against the Russian Selects 3-1.
The Baie-Comeau winger scored the second of three consecutive QMJHL goals in the second period.
Philippe Cornet of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies scored 11 seconds into the period, followed by Bourque at 7:25 and rounded out by Michael Kirkpatrick's power-play goal just over a minute and a half later for a 3-0 nothing lead.
"I thought the guys played with a lot of determination," said Team QMJHL head coach Andre Tourigny. "They played like it was a championship game. I'm very pleased with the energy they displayed throughout the game."
Maxim Karpov responded for the Russian Selects midway through the second.
Russian goaltender Alexander Zalivin was oustanding with a 53-save performance in the loss.
Jake Allen of the Montreal Junior earned the win, combining with Olivier Roy of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles for 21 saves.
Canada has won the previous six series against Russia with an overall record of 30-6 and a scoring margin of 169-74.
