Who's hot, who's not
November 30, 2009

Canadian world junior hopeful Philippe Cornet displayed an offensive touch with a big performance against Baie-Comeau. Meanwhile, Saint John and Barrie remain the hottest teams with double-digit winning streaks.
Ontario Hockey League
Hot team: Barrie Colts
The Colts finally overtook the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors for first in the Central Division and Eastern Conference standings with another undefeated week. Barrie continued flexing its offensive muscle, outscoring its opposition 14-6 in three wins. The Colts' winning-streak is a league-best 14 games while they haven't lost in regulation through 16 contests.
Hot player: Tyler Toffoli, Ottawa 67's
The sophomore sniper is beginning to live up to the hype after a slow start. The potential first-round pick this summer kept his torrid scoring pace with five goals and three assists for eight points in three games. Toffoli's third goal and fifth point against the Generals was the game-winner Friday over Oshawa. He could be named OHL player of the week in consecutive weeks.
Cold team: Sarnia Sting
The young Sting continues to be the front-runner for the top pick in this year's priority selection. Sarnia dropped all three contests to Peterborough, London and Sault Ste. Marie to extend the losing streak to eight games. The team is, however, receiving solid contributions from some of their rookies during the losing skid.
Cold player: Tyler Beskorowany, Kingston Frontenacs
The veteran goaltender was under siege in two contests against Saginaw and Windsor. Beskorowany was beat 13 times on 74 shots through those losses for a .824 save percentage. Although his performance was sub-par, he can't accept all the blame as his team got into penalty trouble and hasn't given him much support.
Game of the week: Kitchener Rangers vs. Guelph Storm, Sunday
Games between the Rangers and Storm are always heated regardless of their position in the standings. Kitchener remains atop the Midwest Division standings while the Storm is at the bottom, 13 points back of the leaders. Guelph is a better team than their record would indicate as the team has struggled defensively this season. The Storm has, however, defeated the Rangers in two of three previous meetings this season. Kitchener is just two points ahead of London for the division lead heading into the week.
Western Hockey League
Hot team: Medicine Hat Tigers
The Tigers had just one game on the schedule due to a shortened week with the Subway Super Series and Grey Cup. Medicine Hat thumped Red Deer 4-1 to extend its winning streak to five-consecutive games. The perennial contending Tigers are now four points back of the Calgary Hitmen for first in the Central Division standings.
Hot player: Nino Niederreiter, Portland Winterhawks
The second-overall pick in last summer's Canadian Hockey League import draft is paying dividends for his new team this season. Niederreiter is one of the best young players added to the resurgent Winterhawks and exhibited an offensive touch last week. The Swiss forward scored six goals and two assists in four games as he is now averaging a point per game.
Cold team: Lethbridge Hurricanes
Last week's cold team failed to break out of their slump in two games this week. The Hurricanes were outscored 9-3 through their two games in Saskatoon and Prince Albert. Lethbridge's losing streak is now six games but gained a point through a shootout loss to the league's top team, the Blades, on Friday.
Cold player: Kyle Beach, Spokane Chiefs
The veteran forward was held to just one point in three games last week with a minus-1 rating. Beach began the season as one of the top scorers after being traded from Lethbridge to Spokane but has since had a drop in production, scoring just one goal in his last six games.
Game of the week: Calgary Hitmen vs. Vancouver Giants, Friday
The two biggest market teams will meet for the second of three games when the Giants host the Hitmen. Calgary beat the Giants 2-0 in Vancouver on Oct. 30. Despite not meeting often, games are always intense between these two rivals who have yet to meet in a playoff series. These two teams appear poised to meet in the final on a near annual basis, further helping influence the rivalry. Expect a low-scoring playoff-type atmosphere at Pacific Coliseum.
Québec Major Junior Hockey League
Hot team: Saint John Sea Dogs
The surging Sea Dogs aced another two big tests while keeping their impressive 17-game winning-streak alive. Saint John defeated division-leaders Drummondville and Québec by two goals each on big performances from overage forwards Mike Hoffman and Nicholas Petersen. The winning-streak is fifth-best in league history and seven wins shy of tying the record.
Hot player: Philippe Cornet, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies
The Huskies forward feasted on Baie-Comeau goaltenders Simon Giroux and Nathan Dunnett in two games last week. Cornet scored twice and assisted on six more for eights points with a plus-4 rating through two games. The Edmonton Oilers prospect is getting hot at the right time as Hockey Canada will name its selection camp invitation list soon.
Cold team: Halifax Mooseheads
The Mooseheads broke out of their slump earlier this month by winning four-consecutive games but have since fallen on hard times. Halifax lost both contests to Québec and Acadie-Bathurst to extend the losing streak to five games. On the bright side, the Mooseheads are competing as both losses were by two goals.
Cold player: Antoine Tardif, Drummondville Voltigeurs
The first-year starting goaltender didn't enjoy the Maritime hospitality during their Atlantic Division road swing. The Voltigeurs lost all three games while Tardif was uncharacteristically poor, allowing 12 goals on 52 shots for a .769 save percentage in losses to Moncton and Cape Breton. His team failed to give him much support, scoring just five goals on the trip.
Game of the week: Saint John Sea Dogs vs. P.E.I. Rocket, Wednesday
The Sea Dogs may have revenge on their minds when they head to Charlottetown for a heated Atlantic Division tilt. The Rocket handed the Sea Dogs two of their five losses this season and are the last team to have beat Saint John. P.E.I. shutout the high-flying Sea Dogs, 4-0, the last time they hosted Saint John on Oct. 13. The Rocket is also beginning to take flight with five-straight wins but remain 16 points behind the Sea Dogs for the top spot in the division.
