Coz for Thought: Junior Hockey Notebook

November 27, 2012, 8:12 PM

While the story was posted on Saturday, by the ever on-top-of-it Neate Sager, it surely is worth a re-mention. It’s the story of Missy Deyo, who’s fighting the good fight and making sure people take notice, in a good way. Check out the Neate-Dog’s story right here.

I lied…said I was going to post my Team Canada World Junior Selection camp choices this week, but I’ll hold off and post a special edition of the blog on Sunday, the day before the camp hopefuls are announced.

When the Edmonton Oil Kings get Martin Gernat and Travis Ewanyk back in their lineup, they’ll be the WHL’s Eastern Conference favourites if they’re not already.

Interesting background in that Moose Jaw Warriors assistant coach Mark O’Leary left his business in Owen Sound to gain valuable coaching experience a long way from home. Mark’s father Brian, was an assistant to current Warriors head coach Mike Stothers going back to the mid-90′s with the Owen Sound Attack.

The new Captain Serious is Moose Jaw goalie Justin Paulic. He’s talked about as if he is 30-years-old, yet he’s not eligible for the NHL draft until 2014.

Nice to meet Sam Fioretti of the Warriors, he’s got a ton of personality and has taken the challenge of being Moose Jaw’s top forward very seriously.

Oil Kings head coach Derek Laxdal says he believes whomever drafts Curtis Lazar will get the most complete player in the draft.

Laxdal also talked about how much he enjoyed his experience in the Subway Super Series, comparing notes with the likes of Don Hay and Don Nachbaur.

Speaking of Nachbaur, congrats on 1,000 games coached in the WHL, he’s now 1/4 to have achieved that feat.

Still waiting on word about the Portland Winterhawks. The longer it goes the worse off it is.

How do you view the Saskatoon Blades? The team that is third in the East Division by virtue of 11 wins, or the team that sits tied with three others for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs?

Another coaching change in Acadie Bathurst, now there’s a shocker. The Titan may be paying more coaches than your average NFL team.

The Erie Otters to Hamilton isn’t all that far-fetched and is worth keeping an eye on.

The London Knights are in the midst of an 11-game win streak.

With the NHL having cancelled games, we at Sportsnet have added two Wednesday night editions of Friday Night Hockey. Next Wednesday we will be in Blaniville-Boisbriand as the Armada play host to Drummondville, and the following Wednesday we will be in Lethbridge for the Hurricanes and Kelowna Rockets.

Don’t forget to check out Patrick King right here.

Completely Off Topic

As much as it means to have won the 100th Grey Cup, Torontonians treat the CFL like the CHL. When it’s a major event, and, “the place to be,” the support is there, when it’s not, the people don’t care.

Stat trick

Not sure what it means, so I’ll leave it up to you to extrapolate the numbers as you see fit, but I was interested in finding out how much of a team’s offence is created on the powerplay.
