Hitmen beat WHL-leading Rockets to extend streak

CALGARY — The Calgary Hitmen extended their win streak to five games on Sunday by defeating the league-leading Kelowna Rockets 4-1 in Western Hockey League action.

Chase Lang had a goal and an assist for the Hitmen (19-11-3) while Beck Malenstyn, Layne Bensmiller and Adam Tambellini added a goal apiece.

Dillon Dube scored the lone goal for the Rockets (26-5-3), who had their five-game win streak halted.

Calgary’s Mack Shields made 17 saves for the win as Jackson Whistle stopped 27-of-30 shots for Kelowna.

The Hitmen went 0 for 4 on the power play while the Rockets scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

BRANDON, Man. — Jordan Papirny stopped all 23 shots he faced as the Wheat Kings blanked Red Deer.

Tim McGauley struck twice for East Division-leading Brandon (24-7-3), John Quenneville had a goal and an assist and Reid Duke also scored.

Rylan Toth made 18 saves for the Rebels (18-12-4), who had a four-game win streak snapped with the loss.

BLAZERS 4 HURRICANES 2

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Collin Shirley had a pair of goals as Kamloops doubled up the Hurricanes.

Cole Ully and Ryan Rehill also scored for the Blazers (13-18-5).

Zane Jones did all the scoring for Lethbridge (6-20-5), which lost its sixth straight outing.

WINTERHAWKS 4 AMERICANS 3

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Adin Hill kicked out 45 shots as Portland held on to edge the Americans.

Alex Overhardt and Alex Schoenborn each had a goal and an assist for the Winterhawks (18-14-3) while Dominic Turgeon and Evan Weinger scored the others.

Beau McCue had a pair of goals for Tri-City (17-14-1), Jordan Topping scored once and Evan Sarthou made 30 saves in defeat.
