Holmberg continues hot start in Chiefs’ win

VICTORIA — Mitch Holmberg scored his fourth and fifth goals of the Western Hockey League season and added an assist to help the Spokane Chiefs dump the Victoria Royals 6-2 on Tuesday.

Holmberg opened the scoring at 9:22 of the first period on a power play. He picked up an assist on Jeremy McIntosh’s goal at 19:48 of the period, to help make it 3-1. Holmberg’s second goal at 8:38 of the third period made it 5-1.

Blair Oneschuk, Carter Proft and Adam Helewka also scored for Spokane (2-0-0).

Logan Nelson had a power-play goal for Victoria in the first period, and Brandon Fushimi scored for the Royals in the second.

Eric Williams made 26 saves for Spokane. Patrik Polivka stopped 19 of 23 shots for Victoria (1-2-0), while teammate Coleman Vollrath turned back 17 of 19 shots.

AMERICANS 6 WINTERHAWKS 2

Centre Brian Williams score his first three goals of the season to power the Tri-City Americans to their first win of the season, with a 6-2 thumping of the Portland Winterhawks.

Williams scored twice in the opening period, as the Americans (1-2-0) opened a 4-1 lead.

Philip Tot, Lucas Nickles, Connor Rankin also scored for Tri-City.

Taylor Leier and Alex Schoenborn scored for the Winterhawks (1-1-1).

Eric Comrie made 30 saves for Tri-City, while Portland’s Brendan Burke allowed six goals on 32 shots over two periods. Jarrod Schamerhorn turned back all eight shots he faced in the Winterhawks’ net the final period.
