McDavid helps Otters to win, Generals take Game 2

Watch as Erie star Connor McDavid streaks in and channels his inner Peter Forsberg to score short-handed against the Sault. Ste. Marie Greyhounds and lead the Otters to a 2-1 series advantage.

ERIE, Pa. – Connor McDavid scored twice — including once shorthanded — as the Erie Otters doubled up the Sault. Ste Marie Greyhounds 4-2 on Sunday in Game 3 of the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference final.

The Otters now lead the best-of-seven series 2-1, with Game 4 set for Tuesday in Erie, Pa.

McDavid has found the scoresheet in every post-season game so far and has 18 goals and 32 points in 12 contests to lead all scorers.


Nick Betz and Nicholas Baptiste also scored for the Otters, who got a 33-save performance from Devin Williams.

Nick Ritchie and Tyler Ganly supplied the offence for the Greyhounds.

Ritchie now has 13 goals and 24 points in 11 playoff games — good for second in OHL scoring behind McDavid.

Sault Ste. Marie’s Brandon Halverson turned away 18-of-22 shots in a losing cause.

The Greyhounds failed to capitalize on the only power-play opportunity that was awarded all game.

GENERALS 1 BATTALION 0 (OT)

OSHAWA, Ont. — Dakota Mermis scored 1:01 into overtime as the Generals squeezed by North Bay in Game 2 to even the Eastern Conference final at a game apiece.

Ken Appleby had a bounce-back performance as he stopped all 33 shots his way to earn the shutout for Oshawa. Appleby let five shots get past him on 27 shots in a 6-1 loss to open the best-of-seven series.

Jake Smith kicked out 38-of-39 shots for the Battalion.

Game 3 goes Tuesday in North Bay.
